Before the Storm by Meowgli Before the Storm by Meowgli
First things first the image is straight, take a minute to look at the tree and you'll realise it's on a hillside looking up ;)

I shot this image just as it had started to rain, proof to myself once again that the most dramatic light usually goes hand in hand with a bit of rain. Not moments later the skies really opened and within a few minutes I was soaked from head to toe.

The whole shoot was ridiculously rushed by my usual standards - at the end of dinner I looked behind me and noticed a faint rainbow which was weird for a sunny summer day but not altogether surprising with the humidity. Before I'd even finished my last mouthful I was running to the car and motoring to a local spot I'd scouted a few weeks previously, hoping to capture some nice light over the ripe wheat fields. Arriving just in time to fire off a couple of rushed compositions of the end of the rainbow, I ran around like a headless chicken in a candy store notching up as many angles as was feasible, knowing such light never lasts for very long. Totally the opposite to my normal shooting style. All in all it was a fun if brief shoot... rainbows, sunset, storm clouds, cut knees, bug bites, torrential rain and a big smile on my face. For me what it's all about :)

Not as much editing has been done to this as you might think by the way, basically just blending a darker exposure to maximise highlight detail in the sky... the colours and light really were intense!

Lovely composition, Adam. And I totally agree with what you wrote in your comment. Events like that happened to me too. My room window is oriented to the west so often I find myself running to the camera bag, take my bicycle (I don't own a car) and pedal fast to get the shot of the nice light that can be seen it starts to appear. Usually I arrive just in time, sometimes a bit late, almost never early enough... But yes, you are very right: "most dramatic light usually goes hand in hand with a bit of rain".
I photographed a rainbow that way... being showered by rain. I risked to be completely soaked when I photographed storm clouds... but the satisfaction is big. It worth the effort.

Thanks Bodgan, I always look at it this way - any discomfort experienced in getting the shot is temporary but a photograph is forever (as long as you remember to backup!)... so yup, always worth it :)
