Jazz Potato by Meowgli Jazz Potato by Meowgli
Couldn't think of a title and was listening to some Mr Scruff while finishing the edit... when I thought of a shot called Jazz Potato it made me giggle too much not to use it as a title...here's the track (bit of a slow starter): [link]

Anyway the shot... a simple one from a couple sunsets ago. This field is on a hill by the way, so in fact the image IS straight. I tried further "straightening" it but it robbed the comp and sky of some drama so I left it as I shot it. Really keen to try shots like this again when I finally get some ND filters... can't wait to turn fields into big blurry seas of green... have I mentioned lately that I miss living by the sea?

Oh, the "straight" problem.. I know it well, people just told me I should fix the horizon, but it would have destroyed the composition.

I see what you mean, the tilt works nicely with the curves :)

In some way, some people, are quite TOO fixed on technical terms and forgetting the mood and the feelings the image is transporting.

(I suppose it is a real German problem here, because we got many technical Freaks here, just excited because of technical fascination, not interested in a photographic philosophy...)

I agree, it's a tough one. There's no doubting the importance of technique, but most important of all I always say is the "feel" of a shot. I guess it's all about striking that balance between left and right brain; between logic and gut instinct ;)

nice. You really go for detail and good results with colour - lots of time spent at the computer over the past few years... no substitute for it! ;) Another manual blend i take it?

You using luminance masking by the way? (Just (re-)discovered its benefits in single exposure images which just dont make the cut because of too much contrast even tho there is no clipping involved - but LM makes it all fine and dandy...)

I wants a 7D - internal spirit level ffs... what else do you need? haha

Thanks mate, aye it takes a while to get the hang of manual blending but it's worth it in the end, it's a skill all of its own but once you crack it there's no going back to hdr/tonemapping imo. Yup using luminance masking on pretty much every (landscape) image these days to retain detail throughout the histogram and avoid any clipping. You should check out Tony Kuyper's luminosity masks, they're a real meal for the mind at first but soooo good, specially the saturation and midtones masks - [link]

Wouldn't mind a 7d myself, I reckon a 5d2 and 7d would be a pretty ultimate combination but not for a bit cos I's too poor haha. 7d also has built in wireless speedlite control. You're due an upgrade and have been working for a bit now, I say go for it :)

Been there done that and donated enough for the goodies (although it was only 2 weekends ago) ;)

Well - I'm not sure i can afford it just yet - if i get a bonus this year then that might be different. We shall see in September... thing is it is about 250 cheaper out here than back in the UK...

I'm in indonesia you muppet - where do you think those photos were taken - Snowdonia?! =P

Work placement - been out here for 5 weeks, heading back to the UK next weekend. You really should head down to London at some point - sod St Andrews - youve done it to death, come play one weekend in the big smoke - and i mean it! (spare bed and all)

Haha! I dunno, I thought maybe you took a family holiday to Peru or something  obviously wasn't paying close enough attention! Sweet, how's it been out there?

Definitely want to get my ass down there, been way overdue, but the main reason for heading back up to St Andrews will be cos a couple of friends are graduating so be good to see em off, and also hoping to expand my portfolio with a wee trip round the highlands. You got any time you could take off at any point for a lil photographic trip up north? Most welcome to come along, be cool to do some shooting... failing that you should come stay at the old boy's in a couple weekends time and I'll show you some amazing bluebell woods! But yeah I'll be down to London soon as funds permit, skint as a mofo for the next month or so as I pay off shit like lost phone, car service, camera service, replacement tripod etc etc...

hahaha. Very nice sunset and great depth. I am about to start coming up with random names for images. I always just call it what it is. That is, after thinking for 20 minutes of what to call it.
Cant wait to see heavy metal asparagus.
