Place of Rest by Meowgli Place of Rest by Meowgli
St Andrews cemetary/ cathedral grounds.. it's a shot I've been wanting for a while since I messed up a pano stitch last year.. this time I didn't need to bother shooting to stitch as I had a wide angle lens along with me.

Canon 40d, Sigma 10-20 @ 10mm, f/8

*updated 30/8/09 - totally fresh process for print - I softened the extreme contrast, removed much of the distortion, applied fewer filters, sharpened with a different method for web and made the final image a little larger.. enjoy!

Really like this lens over the pan shots. Depth without distortion :D

I like the angle of the other one better and this place seems to just work better in black and white, but still a very nice shot. :)

Yes, beautiful sky and saturation. HDR like.
What I don't like are the "stürzende Linien" (sorry I don't know the term in English). It's a problem that comes with an UWW but can easily corrected by Photoshop. The walls at the left and right looks like they'll collapse to the center of the pic. A stitched pano don't have such problems (but others come around). I like your pics so go ahead :-)

thank you, yes a fair point.. in fact I corrected the distortion +4 in photoshop already on this image.. to an extent it can't easily be totally ruled out at the edge of the frame at the widest setting, as I understand it..
I know of using crop with perspective to stretch the frame and have had reasonable success correcting some verticals with it before but sometimes it just leaves things looking a little 'squished'... maybe you have a suggestion of an easier method you would share with me?
.. and I think the term in English is something like 'converging verticals'..
I have a feeling the answer could be something to do with the "vanishing point" filter in photoshop as it sounds relevant and I don't know anything about it! =)

I only got a german version of Photoshop so I've translated free :-)

1.) Load your pic and duplicate layer.
2.) Edit -> Transform -> distort perspectively
3.) Crop your pic

That's it. Hope this helps.

awesome! what usually happens is I hit ctrl + T by instinct to do a transform, and of course that doesn't allow to distort... really useful tip, I'll remember that... from now on buildings may be appearing a little bit straighter =D

thanks so much!
